Candy Cane Chocolate Hot Fudge Sauce

Kate's Safe & Sweet - Peppermint Hot Fudge in Bowl

Hot fudge sauce off the shelf that is safe for our family hasn’t been something we have been very successful in finding… so we made our own using our chocolate frosting mix. For the holidays we added a little bit of peppermint extract and some crushed candy canes on top as well. We then enjoyed on top of our favorite vanilla ice cream. You can leave the peppermint and candy canes out of course and just make a regular hot fudge – it is super delicious that way as well.

This hot fudge sauce only takes a handful of minutes to make.  You can be drizzling it over a bowl of ice cream in ten minutes and you most likely have everything you need to make it (your choice of milk and butter) in your house already. We love using it to make sundaes, but really you could drizzle it over anything your heart desires.  Make your hot fudge dreams come true!  (And pair with cookies too!)

  • Crushed candy canes (optional)

Hot Fudge Instructions:

  1. Place chocolate frosting mix into saucepan.
  2. Add the milk and whisk until blended.
    1. don’t worry if a few lumps, they will go away when you heat the mixture.
  3. Turn heat on stove to medium and stirring occasionally, bring to a boil.
    1. keep the heat as low as possible to avoid scorching.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in peppermint extract and butter. Stir until butter is melted.
  5. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving over ice cream.
  6. Sprinkle with crushed candy canes or add some into the fudge itself – it’s up to you!
  7. Use fudge while hot and store leftovers in container in the refrigerator. To reheat, spoon onto saucepan, and heat on medium-low or microwave for 30 seconds at a time until warm.

Do you know the different between hot fudge and chocolate sauce is? The main difference is the texture. Hot fudge is thicker and more rich while chocolate sauce is thinner and more pourable. Chocolate sauce stays sauce in the refrigerator, while hot fudge in the fridge gets cold and thick… so more like fudge.

The leftover of the hot fudge (if there is any left of course) should be allowed to cool on counter and then placed in a container in the fridge for up to 10 days. Just remove from fridge when ready to use, spoon into a saucepan, and reheat on low on the stovetop.

This is also gift-able!
