  • Measuring cups
  • Cake pan (8″x8″ is what we used)
  • Hand Mixer / Stand Mixer
  • Offset Spatula or knife for frosting

Cake Instructions:

    1. Preheat oven to 350°F.  Line bottom of cake pan with parchment paper. Set aside.
    2. In a large bowl, blend the all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, allspice, and salt together. Set aside.
    3. In a separate bowl, combine applesauce, water, oil and vanilla extract together until smooth.  Scrape the sides of the bowl as needed.
    4. Pour combined wet ingredients into dry, and stir together to form the batter.
    5. Spread batter into prepared baking pan.
    6. Bake on middle rack for 18-20 minutes until toothpick inserted in center comes clean.
    7. Remove pan from oven and place on a wire rack.
    8. Allow cake to cool prior to frosting.

While cooling you can proceed to make the frosting.

Frosting Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl with a hand mixer, or a stand mixer, combine the butter of choice with the shortening. Whip until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  2. Add the contents of the vanilla frosting mix and the cinnamon. Add 1 tablespoon of milk at a time. Whip again until the frosting is light and fluffy, adding a splash more of milk if needed.
  3. Transfer to a piping bag and frost your cake or cupcakes.
  4. Sprinkle top of your cake with ground cinnamon and sugar mixture if you’d like too!

Applesauce cake is best served within 3-4 days.  I recommend storing in the fridge to extend the shelf life.

The cake will taste even sweeter the next day!
